Avodart by GSK
Dutasteride, or more commonly known with its brand name of Avodart is usually used in conjunction with Finasteride to help treat or prevent the side effects of hair loss and aggravation of male pattern baldness associated with the use of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS). It is categorised as a 5-alpha-reductase-inhibitor which has anti-androgenix properties that functions to block out the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Dutasteride can also be found in products like Propecia and Proscar that are used for the same function of lowering DHT to help treat androgenic alopecia and hyperplasia, especially used to help treat the abnormal growth of the prostate glands.
Background of Dutasteride (Avodart)
Dutasteride is often sold pharmaceutically under brand names such as Duprost, Dutagen, Dutas, Duagen, Avolve, Avidart or Avodart. In 2001, it was unknown why the initial clinical trials for Dutasteride was suddenly stopped – although it was continued later on.
How Does Dutasteride Function
Dutasteride or Avodart is a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor, so it works by blocking the action of the enzymes that is responsible for converting testosterone to DHT, called 5a-reductase. With the inhabitation of the 5a-reducatse, testosterone will not be converted into dihydrotestosterone, which makes it a pretty sensible treatment for Male Pattern Baldness. And because of the lower DHT, there will be higher levels of total testosterone.
Why Use Dutasteride
Dutasteride is not only used to help prevent male pattern baldness and hair loss, but it also helps to treat or prevent acne growth due to the over-production of DHT. Keep in mind though, that although DHT might cause acne growth and hair loss, it also helps with muscle growth, and with the DHT being lowered in the body, it might cause you to lose a little muscle hardness, as well as some other androgenic qualities.
Side Effects of Dutasteride
Some of the less common side effects of Dutasteride or Avodart are the likes of decreased ejaculation volume, loss of libido and sexual desire, decreased sexual performance, impotence, the inability to have an erection or keep an erection, and very rarely reports of discharge, swelling, soreness and pain from the breasts.
Recommended Dosage for Dutasteride (Avodart)
Dutasteride is effective enough at dosage of 2.5 mg per day, which means it is at least 1.5 times more effective compared to Finasteride which needs at least 5 mg per day to help treat or prevent hair loss. It helps to regrow hair as well as halting hair loss.
