Finasteride (Proscar)

Finasteride, more commonly known as Propecia or Proscar generic name is most used by bodybuilders on an anabolic steroid cycle who are prone to male pattern baldness, to help prevent hair loss or aggravation of male pattern baldness during a cycle. It is considered to be an active testosterone in oral form, and categorized as Type II 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, and it works by blocking the enzymes that are responsible of converting testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

There are topical versions as well where user would apply directly to the scalp to help prevent male pattern baldness on an anabolic steroid cycle. Finasteride, combined with spironolactone (which does not smell good) and Nizoral might even help to reverse baldness a little.

Medically, Finasteride is actually used to shrink down an abnormally large prostate (also known as BPH or Benign Hyperplasia) in adult men. This is because Dihydrotestosterone or DHT is responsible for the growth of the prostate. Finasteride effectively lowers the conversion of testosterone to DHT.

While oral Finasteride might help with controlling the side effects of hair loss, it lowers down DHT significantly, and this could result in lowered sex drive as well as adversely affect training. Bodybuilders would usually use it in a cycle that includes testosterone, and it is not a bad choice. This is because with Finasteride lowering DHT, testosterone will be a good back up.

How to Use Finasteride Proscar medication?

Testosterone will help to keep your testosterones level up while on finasteride. A dosage of 5 mg per day would be quite reasonable. It is highly recommended that one does not exceed the proposed pharmaceutical dosage, or more than 5 mg per day. Higher dosage of Finasteride might cause your DHT levels to drop extremely low which might cause problems with natural body function.

Side Effects of Finasteride (Proscar 5)

Most common side effect reported by users of Finasteride is decrease of libido and sexual ability and desire. For some users, the use of it might even reduce the amount of semen that comes out during sexual intercourse. While this could be harmless, some users report that this side effect might continue even after they stop using it.

Some of the serious side effects that are associated with Finasteride are:- difficulty in breathing, very bad dizziness, swelling and itching of the throat, tongue or face, inability to urinate, the feeling of pain in the testicles, the nipple feels tender, pain or enlarged, nipple discharge and lump found in the breast.
