Letrozole by Actavis
Letrozole, or more widely known with its commercial name Femara is an orally administered aromatase inhibitor (AI), which was originally created to heal hormonally responsive breast cancer post-surgery. Besides that, the FDA had approved the use of letrozole in post-menopausal women who appear to have hormone receptor positive types of breast cancer.
However in India, it is a whole different story as it was banned in 2011 after reports of dangers towards infants when taken by women who were pregnant. However, the American Society of Reproductive Medicine did a research and proved that it does not cause birth defects to infant, and therefore, letrozole or Femara remains to be legal all over the world.
Besides its initial use, many studies had found that Letrozole have its own range of off label use as well, such as helping under-grown adolescent boys to grow bigger and taller when stacked with growth hormone. It is also use to help to promote fertility in women who have problem conceiving as it helps to stimulate ovaries, as well as promote fertility in men as it helps to increase the production of sperm.
The Use of Letrozole (Femara) in Bodybuilding
Letrozol is considered to be an extremely potent Aromatase Inhibitor, which makes it a popular arsenal in anabolic androgenic steroid cycles taken by bodybuilders. It would usually be stocked up on standby to help battle emergency situations when estrogen related side effects start to arise and get out of control. When you use anabolic andogenic steroids like equipoise, deca durabolin, dianabol, testosterone and others, most of it aromatizes and coverts to estrogen.
This will cause estrogenic side effects such as water retention, decrease libido, disrupt sleep, raise blood pressure, unstable energy, and the ever hated gynecomastia. If left untreated, these side effects could cause a lot of harm and might be permanent – where it would be costly and difficult to treat each situation, especially gynecomastia. This is why bodybuilders would have letrozole or femara on standby when they are on cycle to help battle any side effects when it arises due to aromatizing of steroids.
How Does Letrozole (Femara) Work
It works the same as all of the other aromatase inhibitors which is by binding itself to the aromatase enzyme, and this prevents the aromatising proses. Letrozole is classified as a type II aromatase inhibitor. Letrozole is the strongest aromatase inhibitor on the market today, and according to studies, it has the capability of dropping estrogen levels drastically by up to 65% in men. It does this by destroying estrogen as well as competing for receptor spots by binding to it.
Using Letrozole to Treat Gynecomastia
Those who are prone to gynecomastia should have letrozole on standby to help combat it when it is about to come during cycle. Many bodybuilders would vouch that letrozole is the best when it comes to fight off gyno while on cycle, while all the other aromatase inhibitor just could not do it. Other aromatase inhibitors could be started together on a cycle and taken every day to keep the estrogen at bay – but if you did not include an AI during cycle, and side effects get out of control, if you are desperate, letrozole will be able to help you.
Side Effects of Letrozol (Femara)
Just like any other compound, letrozole comes with side effects too. It is an extremely strong aromatase inhibitor and it might cause the body’s estrogen level to greatly drop. While as bodybuilders, we have the impression that estrogen is bad for you, however when it is very low, it could be pretty devastating. Estrogen plays little role in muscle development, and lacking of it will also cause side effects such as lower libido, weak immune system, moody and emotional and depression. Because of this, it is best not to abuse the use of letrozole. It is always kept for emergencies when on a cycle.
Half Life and Dosages
The dosages could differ from one manufacturer to another, but it usually ranges from 0.25 mg up to 1 mg every day, or suitable when you are starting on it. Be very care conservative and careful with the dosage as if you are overdosed, the side effects could be quite bad.
